Enseignement scientifique et technique - NAETPF_920 : European forests: challenge and opportunities

Descriptif

The aim of this introductory unit is to provide an overview of current societal, economic and environmental challenges and approaches to forest management of temperate forests.
Following a review of the environmental and societal demands that these forests encounter, economic concepts and policy context of sustainable forest management are developed.
Emphasis is also placed on concepts and current methods of ecosystemic services (wood production and environmental services) in a double context of European payments and global change.
The unit comprehends introductory courses and conferences on the issues covered in the objectives. A few concrete case studies are presented in sessions of application. Participants will be invited to work on a specific case study and produce a written report of their related analysis.

Objectifs pédagogiques

A large array of valuation techniques widely used in environmental economics.
Know the main methods for valuation of recreational value of natural sites (e.g. trip demand models, site selection models, discrete choice experiments).
Introduction to data collection (design of surveys) for valuation studies.
Main spatial statistical tests and spatial econometric models.
Understanding the role of discounting.
Understanding the link between discounting and the planning horizon in forestry economics.
Understanding of the concept of optimal rotation age.
Understanding the concept of optimization under uncertainty.

Some basis knowledge in microeconomics (consumer and producer, utility function, surplus)
Basic statistics
Background in econometrics (linear regression analysis, models with limited dependent variables, panel data)
Background in statistical softwares (STATA and R).
Basic concepts of probability
Basic knowledge of derivation and optimization
