Objectifs pédagogiques
The aim of this course is to describe the hydrology and dynamics of the ocean on a global scale. The ocean-atmosphere interactions, the concept of water mass and the thermohaline circulation are presented. For each large basin, the parameters having an influence on the hydrology and dynamics of the basin are described - topography, distribution of atmospheric pressure and the resulting winds, climatology and surface circulation related to the action of the winds. Then, the specific hydrology of each ocean is studied with the origin, formation, movement and mixing of the various water masses encountered, leading to the global thermohaline circulation. Then the role of the ocean on the climate is briefly approached as well as examples of variability.
