Descriptif
French forest ecosystems are largely confined to the least favorable soils for agriculture: soil is often acidic, chemically poor and unfertilized. In addition, forest ecosystems are characterized by a very long life cycle (perennials multi-decadal revolution or secular). As a result, their functioning and durability are highly dependent on elements circulation and recycling in the continuum soil-plant-atmosphere (biogeochemical cycles). The current context of global changes (climate, pollution, increased demand for wood energy) exerts pressure on these ecosystems. This can lead to dysfunctioning or loss of some functions, such as biomass production functions, production of quality water, biodiversity, carbon sequestration ...The module aims at introducing the basic concepts of the biogeochemical functioning of forest ecosystems (biological cycles, biochemical and geochemical) in this changing context. It also introduces the issues and current constraints to the sustainability of forest ecosystems. The concepts are presented in an introductory course, then the cycles of the major elements (C, N, water, major cations) are detailed, specifying the tools and methods used, as well as the recent advances in this field. The scales covered range from the micrometer scale to the global scale, with a focus on the scale of the soil profile. Metrology presents problems related to the monitoring of natural systems: spatial and temporal heterogeneity, climate-related hazards, in situ automation management, quality and limit data, setting database.
