Enseignement scientifique et technique - Ath-AGROPT22 : AGROPT22 Animals in Science: Today's Challenges

Descriptif

 This module is in English.

Animals face many challenges in science, as do those who work with animals. While this course maintains a very general title, and will cover methane production by herbivores, the focus this year will be on animal well-being, especially as it concerns animals kept for farming and for research. What are the most pressing concerns? How can we determine what they are? How can we assess the well-being of animals, and, hopefully, measure the progress of attempts to improve or guarantee a high level of it? Once we know what we should do, what is preventing us from doing it? What are the aspects of human nature that keep us from doing the right thing? This course will ask these questions, and will try to answer some of them, or, at least, help us ask them in a good way.

Objectifs pédagogiques

The objectives of this course are:

- to understand the multi-dimensional aspect of animal well-being

- to appreciate the challenges animals face while being cared for by humans

- to appreciate the challenges faced when designing an assessment protocol for animal well-being

- to discuss the human side of ethical considerations, to understand our shortcomings as ethical beings and identify potential ways to overcome them
