Enseignement scientifique et technique - GENV_Ecol_Know : Ecological knowledge, social construction and environmental conflicts in the tropics

Descriptif

In this course, different disciplinary perspectives in social sciences (socio-anthropology, strategic management, political ecology) will be introduced through lectures, each of them considering differently the role of ecological and other forms of knowledge to inform decision, action and management of ecological issues in tropical contexts. The course aims at introducing these perspectives and at giving the students a chance to dig deeper through readings as well as to apply key insights from these perspectives (e.g. normative pluralism, local Vs expert knowledge, power asymmetries, government action Vs private action, etc.) to shed light, analyse and disentangle issues of biodiversity and tropical forest conservation. Doing so, students will learn the specificities and the limits of each perspective and their complementarities. They will also be put in a concrete decision-making situation through the case study exercise.

Programme détaillé

Lectures (approximately 9 hours) and individual work (13 hours) supervised by the teaching staff and external experts. The course will be based along on a fictive (but close to reality) case in environmental management where students will be put from day one in a situation of disentangling a complex biodiversity and tropical forest conservation issue through the concepts learnt during the lectures and additional readings. At the end of the course, the group of students will have to argue for or against the project displayed in the case based on the arguments developed during the week.
